Foreword

photograph of a workshop 'The Big Picture' was published by SCVO in May 1999, following research and consultation with a wide range of voluntary organisations.

It has been well received and is helping a number of voluntary organisations to undertake a structured review of their processes for ensuring stakeholder satisfaction, planning and direction and assessing positive impact.

A number of people asked us for further guidance on learning and human resource development within their organisations. With the help of ESF Objective 4 funding, we have developed this pack as a guide to 'Putting People in the Picture'.

To make the pack as practical and helpful as possible, we hope to replicate many of the forms and checklists on the SCVO website, so that organisations can download and modify them to their own requirements. We intend, over time, to develop the website and the voluntary sector portal workwithus.org.uk so that you can get further guidance on various aspects of learning and development.

We are conscious that this is the first step in a process of continuous improvement and, as with 'The Big Picture', we are committed to improving the pack, with the help of our peer supporters. So please use it and let us know how you think it can be improved.
